Russia Rejects Ukraine's Black Sea Shipping Truce Offer
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia rejected Ukraine's offer for a truce on Black Sea shipping, citing concerns over attacks on its energy infrastructure. The dispute has raised fears about grain supplies to world markets.
The two countries account for more than a quarter of global wheat exports, with ports in Ukraine's Greater Odesa region handling around 90% of its grain shipments. Since the start of August, Ukraine has exported only about 500,000 tons of grain, or about a fifth of its potential shipments, according to Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotskyi.
Zelenskyy proposed that foreign vessels be used to export both Ukrainian and Russian agricultural commodities, but acknowledged that Russia is not ready for this proposal. He also stated that Ukraine is seeking 300 Patriot missiles for its air defenses this winter, as the country faces shortages of interceptors due to increased Russian air attacks.
