Russia Rejects Ukrainian Offer for Black Sea Shipping Truce Amid Grain Disruptions
The conflict between Ukraine and Russia is causing disruptions to global grain supplies as both countries engage in attacks on each other's commercial ships and ports in the Black Sea area. The two nations account for over a quarter of global wheat exports, with Ukraine's Greater Odesa region handling around 90% of its grain shipments.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that his country offered Russia a truce on attacks against ships carrying agricultural commodities through the Black Sea but was rejected because Moscow wanted guarantees against strikes on its energy infrastructure. 'It looks like their position is that they will not attack our grain corridor only if we stop attacking their energy sector,' Zelenskyy said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged economic damage from Ukrainian drone attacks and stated that he'd rejected ceasefire proposals from Kyiv as 'unacceptable' and in some cases, 'exotic'.
