Russia Revives Arctic Oil Production Amid US Sanctions
Rosneft's Vostok oil project in Russia's Arctic has begun producing crude after delays due to Western sanctions. The project, which aims to boost Russia's oil production, started loading oil onto ice-tankers at its Bukhta Sever Terminal on the Taimyr Peninsula in September.
The terminal can currently produce 150,000 barrels per day, but Moscow hopes to reach its target of 2 million barrels per day soon. The Vostok project is crucial for Russia as it faces declining oil exports due to US sanctions and the war with Ukraine.
Rosneft has faced difficulties since 2022 when several key investors, including Vitol and Trafigura, exited due to sanctions. The company has now relied on domestic funds and assets, causing delays and losses. However, with the project operational, it will not only tap into Arctic reserves but also provide a stable export hub far from drone or missile attacks that have struck Russia's Black Sea ports.
