Russia Tops Global Natural Gas Reserves List Followed by Iran and Qatar
Natural gas reserves are a cornerstone of the global energy sector, enabling nations to meet domestic needs, support energy-dependent industries, and supply international markets. The largest reserves are concentrated in Asia and the Middle East, with a handful of countries leading the global rankings. These rankings can vary based on data sources and years, so confirmed reserves are essential for accurate comparisons.
According to the latest data, Russia holds the world’s largest natural gas reserves, estimated at 47.2 trillion cubic meters as of 2024. Iran follows with 34 trillion cubic meters, while Qatar ranks third with 23.8 trillion cubic meters. The United States, Turkmenistan, Saudi Arabia, and China also feature prominently in the list of countries with significant reserves.
The South Pars/North Field, shared by Iran and Qatar, is the world’s largest gas field, boasting about 51 trillion cubic meters of reserves. While Russia tops the reserve rankings, production levels can differ, with the U.S., Russia, Iran, and China among the leading producers.
Large gas reserves are influenced by geological factors and technological advancements in exploration. These reserves play a crucial role in economic development, supporting local industries, electricity generation, and petrochemical production, while also providing revenue through exports and long-term energy security.
