Russia Trims Gas Output Forecasts Amid Shifting Energy Landscape
Russia has lowered its natural gas production and export forecasts amid shifting global energy markets. This move underscores the long-term impact of Europe's departure from Russian energy supplies.
The updated economic outlook cuts projected natural gas production to 683.1 billion cubic meters (bcm), a downward revision of several billion cubic meters from previous estimates. LNG exports are also expected to be lower than previously forecast, with Russia now targeting 35 million tons in 2023, down from the earlier projection of 40.5 million tons.
The revisions reflect year-on-year growth compared to previous cycles but represent a major reduction from earlier government targets. Historically, Russian pipeline gas exports to Europe peaked at roughly 180 bcm annually, but this figure has plummeted drastically following geopolitical conflicts and deliberate European policy choices.
