Russia-Ukraine Conflict Sparks Grain Market Surge
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has sent shockwaves through the global grain market, causing wheat and corn futures to surge overnight. The escalation in the war saw Ukraine launch a barrage of over 1,000 drones at Russian targets, including hundreds aimed at Moscow.
According to reports, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on social media that the drones were dispatched to strike energy and logistics facilities. Russia's retaliation included firing drones into southern Ukraine over the weekend.
The impact of the conflict is being felt in the market, with investors shifting from a bullish stance to bearish bets on wheat futures. According to data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the net-short position in soft-red winter futures contracts increased to 3,674 contracts as of September 15.
The CFTC also reported that money managers reduced their net-long positions in hard-red winter futures to 44,413 contracts from 48,676 contracts a week earlier. However, bullish bets on corn remained relatively unchanged, with a net-long position of 414,460 futures contracts.
