Russian Diesel Export Ban Exacerbates Global Shortage

Global diesel supplies are facing a severe shortage due to Russia's ban on diesel exports in response to Ukraine's strikes on Russian energy facilities. The move has removed approximately 800,000 barrels of fuel per day from the market.

Before the ban, Russian diesel was primarily supplied to Turkey, Brazil, and some African countries where Russian petroleum products are not under sanctions. However, the search for alternative supplies in these countries has reduced diesel inventories in Europe and increased the role of the United States in fuel supplies.

Kpler analysts report that global oil refining currently amounts to about 80 million barrels of fuel per day, down from the typical level of approximately 86 million barrels per day. Additionally, around 40% of Russia's refining capacity is not operating due to the conflict.

Debnil Chowdhury, head of refining and marketing at S&P Global Energy for the Americas and Europe, warned that rising diesel prices may spread through the economy over three to six months, affecting economic growth rates through the end of 2026 and next year.
