Russian Port Restrictions Threaten Egypt's Wheat Supply Chain

Russia's restrictions on truck deliveries at three Black Sea terminals have disrupted Egypt's wheat supply chain, according to Reuters. The terminals in Novorossiysk and Taman handle over 20 million tons of grain per year, with around 40% going to major buyers like Egypt and Turkey.

The affected ports shipped a combined 1.53 million tons of wheat to Egypt between January and February 2026, which is about 12% of the country's annual import requirement. Russia had previously restricted navigation through the Sea of Azov after Ukrainian drones struck several grain vessels.

This disruption threatens to raise freight costs or delay shipments to Egypt, which relies heavily on Black Sea wheat. In the first half of 2026, Russia supplied Egypt with 4.5 million tons of wheat, compared to 3.9 million tons from Ukraine.
