Uniper Secures Long-Term LNG Deal with Canadian Ksi Lisims Project
Germany's Uniper has finalized a 20-year liquefied natural gas (LNG) purchase deal with Canada, deepening bilateral ties between the two nations.
The agreement, announced on Wednesday, follows an initial deal in June where Uniper secured two million tons of gas per year from 2032 from Canada's LNG project Ksi Lisims on British Columbia's Pacific coast.
This deal is part of European efforts to diversify alternative gas routes after Russia's Gazprom stopped delivering in 2022, leaving the region reliant on US supplies.
Canada, which aims to reduce its dependency on US buyers, has signed export deals with Japan, India, and Malaysia, among others.
The Ksi Lisims project is backed by Western LNG, the Rockies LNG consortium, and the Nisga'a First Nation. Gas liquefaction will be powered by hydroelectric dams.
