A Russian missile strike on July 19 has led to catastrophic consequences for Ukraine's maritime sector. The merchant ship Golden Leo, flying the flag of Guinea-Bissau and transporting grain from the port of Chornomorsk, was hit by a Russian attack.

The vessel sustained significant damage to its hull and superstructure, which resulted in its loss of seaworthiness and subsequent sinking near Odesa on July 26. Initially, eight crew members were safely evacuated, but nine others, including a Ukrainian pilot, lost their lives in the shelling a week ago.

The incident has sparked concerns about global food security as exports via the Ukrainian maritime corridor come to a halt. The Kremlin's military actions have been condemned for violating international law and putting human lives at risk.
