Russian Strikes Disrupt Black Sea Grain Exports Amid Escalating Tensions
Russian strikes have had far-reaching consequences in the Black Sea region, causing significant damage to civilian merchant ships and disrupting global grain exports. On July 19, the cargo ship Golden Leo was attacked while exiting the sea corridor from the port of Chornomorsk, resulting in ten fatalities and eight crew members being evacuated.
The vessel, sailing under the Guinea-Bissau flag and carrying corn, suffered significant damage to its hull and superstructure, rendering it seaworthy. On July 26, the Golden Leo sank due to these damages.
The Odesa regional military administration has stated that no signs of oil product pollution have been detected in the sea waters near the city following the sinking, although monitoring continues to ensure any potential issues are addressed promptly.
