Russian Tanker Oil Spill Threatens Environmental Disaster Off Oman's Coast

A British company, Ambrey, has been hired to salvage a grounded Russian tanker off Oman's coast after an explosion in early June. The Caroline Bezengi, part of Russia's 'shadow fleet', was carrying over 800,000 barrels of oil when it ran aground near Qabiliyah Island.

The tanker's cargo has been spreading rapidly due to stormy weather associated with the Khareef monsoon season in Oman. Satellite images have shown the spill has reached over 200 kilometers north of Qabiliyah Island, and experts warn that an unprecedented environmental disaster could occur if the vessel sinks or breaks open.

Ambrey's global response director, Ed Wollaston, said the situation is 'extremely challenging' due to adverse weather conditions. The company has not estimated how long the salvage operation will take or cost.
