A Russian warship has been escorting an LNG tanker along Norway's coast as the Arctic shipping season peaks.

The Admiral Kasatonov frigate from Russia's Northern Fleet was accompanying the Portovyy, a Gazprom-operated LNG carrier, which had left the company's Portovaya LNG plant in Vyborg district near the Finnish border. The vessel is carrying a cargo of liquefied natural gas and is heading for Murmansk.

The movements come during the peak navigation season on the Northern Sea Route when sea ice is at its lowest level, making it easier for ships to pass through. However, Russian vessels still face harsh weather and changing ice conditions.
