Russia's Black Sea Blockade Sparks Global Food Security Crisis
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has led to a significant threat to global food security. Since July, Russia has been restricting commercial maritime traffic in the Black Sea by striking vessels transporting goods with missiles.
This is particularly concerning because Ukraine is the world's largest grain exporter, providing about 50% of the global sunflower seed and sunflower oil supply, as well as around 12% of the global wheat supply. The disruption has already led to a 76% drop in Ukrainian grain exports in the first half of August.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that Russia pulled out of a UN-brokered agreement known as the 'Black Sea Initiative' in July 2023, which allowed for the free flow of exports in the region. As a result, Ukraine has been forced to look for alternative transport routes, including land transport through NATO member states.
However, this has also led to tensions between Ukrainian farmers and local farmers in countries such as Poland, who are concerned about the impact on their own products' prices.
