Russia's Blockade of Ukraine Grain Exports Sparks Global Food Security Concerns

Russia has imposed another blockade on Ukraine's grain exports, threatening the country's critical harvest and global food security. The move comes as the world focuses on the US blockade of Iranian ports and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Ukraine is the world's largest exporter of sunflower seeds and sunflower oil, accounting for 50% of the global supply. It also ranks third in barley exports (18%), fourth in corn exports (16%), and fifth in wheat exports (12%).

Russian forces have struck at least 50 Ukrainian cargo ships since June, killing over 30 civilians. The blockade has already devastated Ukraine's farmers, with the country's grain export forecast for the 2026-27 fiscal year expected to be around 38-40 million tonnes, a 12% drop from previous estimates.

The situation is similar to the blockade Russia imposed on Ukrainian ports at the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022. To support Ukrainian farmers, Ukraine's government has approved an emergency support package and is seeking additional support from the European Commission.
