Russia's Blockade of Ukraine's Ports Imperils Global Food Security
Russia's blockade of Ukraine's Black Sea ports is threatening global food security and putting Ukraine's farmers in dire straits. The country is the world's largest exporter of sunflower seeds and oil, accounting for over 50% of the global supply.
The blockade has already been devastating for Ukrainian farmers, with more than 90% of their products exported via Black Sea ports. According to one economist, the blockade could cost Ukraine around 1-1.5% of its GDP by the end of the year.
Ukraine's Agriculture Minister, Taras Vysotsky, has stated that the country expects a grain harvest of about 60 million tonnes this year but will only be able to export around 38-40 million tonnes due to the blockade. This is a 12% drop from previous estimates and could lead to delays in exports, broken contracts with foreign buyers, and less money going to farmers.
