Russia's Danube Port Attack Disrupts Ukraine's Grain Exports
Russia's attacks on Ukraine's Danube port have damaged vital infrastructure and disrupted grain exports via the river. The attack, which occurred overnight on August 13, caused a fire and knocked out power in the southeast of the city.
The port of Izmail, near the Romanian border in Ukraine's southern region of Odesa, handles exports of grain and other commodities. The damage to the port complicates efforts to export grain to Europe, which is already facing challenges due to record-low Danube water levels.
Ukraine is among the world's largest producers of wheat, corn, and sunflower seeds, with around 90% of its exports going through the Black Sea. The blockade has raised fears of shortages in African and Middle Eastern nations that rely on Ukrainian exports.
