Russia's Grain Export Crisis Deepens Amid Drone Strikes and Port Shutdowns
The Russian Federation's Rostov region has declared a state of emergency due to problems with grain exports. This comes after the ports on the Sea of Azov and Black Sea were shut down due to drone attacks in mid-July.
The Rostov region accounts for nearly 10% of Russia's grain harvest, and since July 15th, shipments from these ports have come to a halt. The largest grain terminals on the Black Sea also stopped operations after being hit by drone strikes.
This has led to wheat exports falling to a 16-year low in August, with only 1.9 million tonnes exported. According to Arkady Zlochevsky, president of the Russian Grain Union, 'the situation for farmers looks very bad'.
