Russia's Naval Blockade Imperils Global Food Security Amid Ukraine Grain Export Crisis
Russia's naval blockade of Ukraine's ports is threatening global food security by crippling the country's grain exports. The situation is critical, as more than 90% of Ukraine's agricultural products are exported via Black Sea ports.
Since June, Russian forces have struck at least 50 Ukrainian cargo ships, killing over 30 civilians. This has led to a decline in shipping to Ukrainian seaports, with Ukraine retaliating by attacking Russia's Black Sea ports.
The blockade could cost Ukraine around 1-1.5% of its GDP by the end of the year, according to one economist. The country's grain harvest is expected to be around 60 million tonnes this year, but exports are forecasted to drop by 12% due to the blockade.
Ukraine has offered Russia a deal to halt attacks on civilian targets in the Black Sea, but so far, there has been no agreement. The situation is precarious, not only for Ukraine but also regional and global food security.
