S.Africa Fruit Export Shifts as Market Access Takes Center Stage
The South African fruit export industry is undergoing a significant shift as market access, logistics, and timing of exports become crucial for profitability. According to the Absa AgriTrends 2026 Spring Edition report, production growth remains a source of long-term opportunity, but increasing volumes do not necessarily translate into better producer returns.
Agricultural economist Zama Sangweni explained that this represents a shift in the high-value export industry, where producing more fruit is no longer enough to secure stronger returns. Profitability depends on whether additional production can be placed in markets at commercially sustainable prices.
