SA Gas Industry Faces Critical Decline Amid Pande and Temane Supply Shortages
South Africa's gas industry is facing a critical decline in supplies from Mozambique's Pande and Temane fields, which has been described as a 'gas cliff' by industry players. This shortage threatens energy security and could impact industrial production, investment, employment, and the country's economic competitiveness.
The Industrial Gas Users Association of Southern Africa and the African Energy Leadership Centre hosted a webinar at Wits Business School to discuss the issue. Executive Officer Jaco Human said that the government is not engaging with the private sector to address the problem. 'We simply don't see that,' he stated, adding that the government has a key role to play in unlocking the gas economy.
Humans' comments come as South Africa's reliance on natural gas from Mozambique has been decreasing over time. The country is now facing significant challenges in meeting its energy needs, and industry players are calling for urgent action to address the issue.
