Sandfire Shifts from Growth Mode to Cash Returns
Sandfire Resources Ltd (ASX:SFR), an Australian copper producer, has transitioned into a net cash position and restored its dividend after several years of pausing payments.
The company's operations in Spain and Botswana have successfully converted strong metal prices into cash, rather than just generating revenue. This shift is evident in the latest full-year result, where revenue rose strongly, underlying earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation climbed sharply, and net profit jumped several-fold.
The MATSA copper operations in southern Spain, which produce copper, zinc, lead, and silver concentrates, have been a key contributor to Sandfire's success. The operation benefits from established infrastructure, access to European smelters, and a stable regulatory framework in the European Union. However, it also faces elevated European energy costs due to Middle East tensions and higher oil prices.
