Sarawak's Local Oil and Gas Expertise Proves Its Worth with Methane Gas Discovery

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has announced that the recent discovery of methane gas at Adong Kechil in the Miri-Marudi area is a significant milestone for the state's oil and gas industry. The Premier highlighted that local expertise played a crucial role in the discovery, proving that Sarawakians are capable of leading the industry.

Abang Johari noted that some had questioned the need for Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) when it was established, suggesting that Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) should handle oil and gas operations. However, the Premier emphasized that PETROS has proven its capabilities, with Sarawakians successfully drilling at Adong Kechil.

The methane gas discovery is also seen as a step towards Sarawak's transition to a sustainable and low-carbon economy. The state aims to develop renewable energy sources, including hydrogen and methane gas, to address climate change challenges. Abang Johari explained that methane gas can be further developed into higher-value products, creating new economic opportunities for Sarawak.

The Premier announced the achievement of first oil production at Adong Kechil West (AKW) on July 22, 2026, with the field producing around 800 barrels per day. This milestone marks Sarawak's return to onshore oil production after more than 50 years and is expected to expand downstream industries.
