Saudi Arabia Adapts to Regional Shifts with Focus on Domestic Transformation

Saudi Arabia's leadership is shifting its priorities in response to recent regional developments. The country will focus on protecting its domestic transformation, which will manifest itself in four key areas. Firstly, Saudi Arabia will continue to de-escalate conflicts in the region, including Yemen and Sudan, while maintaining a fragile truce with the Houthis in Yemen.

Secondly, Saudi Arabia will accelerate development of alternative oil export routes and investment in renewable energy. The Iran war has highlighted the vulnerability of the country's energy infrastructure, prompting efforts to diversify its economy and reduce dependence on oil exports. Pipelines are being constructed to reduce reliance on the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

Thirdly, Saudi Arabia will diversify its strategic partnerships and focus on developing indigenous defense capabilities. The country has learned a hard lesson from recent attacks, including those by Iran or its proxies in 2019 and the Houthis' targeting of oil shipments in 2023. In response, Saudi Arabia is seeking to develop more sophisticated defense systems and expand its partnerships with countries like Pakistan and Turkey.

The kingdom's approach will be guided by a desire to protect itself from the consequences of regional conflicts, including radicalization, subversion, refugees, and cross-border attacks.
