Saudi Arabia Expands Energy Strategy with Solar, Wind, and Nuclear Power
Saudi Arabia is revamping its energy strategy by combining oil and gas production with the development of solar, wind generation, and civilian nuclear power. This transformation began in March 1938 when tests at Dammam Well No. 7 confirmed commercial oil production was possible.
The 'Well of Prosperity' marked the start of Saudi Arabia's economic growth. In 1980, Saudi Aramco became fully state-owned, and by 1988, the Saudi Arabian Oil Company had been established.
During the 2026 war between the US, Israel, and Iran, disruptions to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz highlighted the importance of alternative export routes. Saudi oil exports through Yanbu on the Red Sea coast increased to approximately 4.6 million barrels per day on April 2 due to the East-West Pipeline and storage capacities.
Saudi Aramco's adjusted net income for the first half of 2026 was $67.2 billion, thanks in part to years of investment in pipelines, terminals, and storage facilities.
