Saudi Arabia Foils Houthi Drone Attack on Mecca

Riyadh has intercepted a Houthi drone headed towards Mecca, marking a significant escalation in attacks on Saudi territory. The incident has raised concerns about the security of Islam's two holiest sites and pilgrims.

The drone was destroyed before it entered Mecca's restricted airspace, according to Saudi-led coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki. He described the security of the holy city as a 'red line' and warned of deterrent action against the Iran-aligned Houthis.

The Houthis have denied targeting Mecca or other holy sites, calling the Saudi allegation false. This is the second Houthi attempt to target Mecca, following a ballistic missile launch in July 2017 that was directed towards the holy city, according to Malki.
