Saudi Arabia Forms 43-Nation Coalition to Secure Red Sea Trade Routes
Saudi Arabia has proposed a maritime defense coalition to protect trade routes in the Red Sea from attacks by Iran's allies. The first meeting of military representatives was held in Riyadh on July 30, with 43 nations participating.
The Saudi Defense Ministry stated that the goal of the initiative is to 'enhance maritime security, protect international maritime corridors, and counter threats targeting maritime navigation and global trade.'
The Red Sea has become increasingly significant as an alternative route for oil exports due to the Iran war. However, this new lifeline has itself come under threat from attacks by the Houthis, who announced a 'blockade' of Saudi shipping last week.
