Saudi Arabia Imposes Steep Fines for Marine Pollution Violations
Saudi Arabia has introduced new regulations to protect its marine and coastal ecosystems from pollution. The revised executive regulations for sustainable management of the marine and coastal environment were approved by Abdulrahman Al Fadley, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture.
The new rules impose fines of up to SR5 million for failing to contain leaks in marine and coastal areas. Penalties will be determined based on the extent of environmental damage and the affected area.
Offenders must also rectify violations, repair damage, and pay prescribed compensation. Owners and operators are required to notify the National Centre for Environmental Compliance immediately in case of oil spills or leaks of harmful substances.
