Saudi Arabia Turns to Nuclear Power Amid Oil Wealth
Saudi Arabia, one of the world's largest oil producers, is shifting its focus towards nuclear energy. The country has signed a civilian nuclear cooperation agreement with the United States, which will allow both nations to work together on developing Saudi Arabia's civil nuclear energy program.
The deal permits Saudi Arabia to build nuclear power plants and develop nuclear technology, as well as enrich uranium under certain conditions. However, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has previously stated that if neighboring Iran develops a nuclear weapon, Saudi Arabia would follow suit.
Saudi Arabia's economy is heavily reliant on oil, with crude accounting for around 40% of its GDP in 2022. To reduce this dependence, the government aims to save more oil for exports and generate electricity from cleaner sources under its Vision 2030 plan.
