The Houthi rebels in Yemen have seized control of the port city of Mocha and Perim Island, significantly increasing their grip on the country's coastline. This strategic move brings them closer to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key shipping route for oil exports.
This development has raised concerns about the security of Saudi Arabia's oil infrastructure and exports. The Houthis have been targeting vessels carrying Saudi oil, including shelling facilities on September 8. In July, they even imposed a blockade on ships transporting Saudi exports.
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and is crucial for international trade. Saudi Arabia has become increasingly reliant on this route due to its redirection of oil shipments from the Strait of Hormuz to the East-West pipeline.
