Saudi Arabia Warns of Hostile Aerial Threat as Tensions with Yemen Rebels Escalate

Saudi Arabia issued its first alert in the capital since hostilities escalated with Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, warning of a 'hostile aerial threat' and prompting emergency alerts nationwide.

The kingdom's authorities did not comment on what prompted the alerts, but they previously reported intercepting Houthi missiles and drones. An explosion was heard in Riyadh after the first alert, with residents near the airport reporting a plume of smoke later in the morning.

No casualties or damages were reported, but Houthi rebels claimed to have targeted 'sensitive sites' in Riyadh and facilities of Aramco, the world's largest oil company. The group said they used cruise and ballistic missiles as well as drones in their attack.
