Regional tensions have been escalating in the Middle East after Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi met with Saudi general intelligence chief Khalid al-Humaidan to discuss coordination over regional security developments. The meeting came amid heightened tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Iraqi armed groups following recent strikes by Riyadh against targets in Iraq that it said were responsible for attacks on its oil facilities.

Zaidi reaffirmed Baghdad's commitment to protecting its sovereignty and preventing regional escalation, stating that Iraq would not allow its territory to be used to launch attacks or activities targeting any other country. This comes after Saudi Arabia warned of imminent coordinated attacks from Iraqi militias north of the Gulf state and from Yemen's Houthis from the south under the supervision of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Saudi officials have expressed concerns about civilian and economic sites being targeted, including energy infrastructure, ports, and airports. The warning underscores how the Gulf kingdom has come increasingly into the crosshairs of the regional conflict over the past weeks.
