Saudi Arabia's New Export Strategy Shifts Focus to Red Sea

The tanker market in the Middle East is undergoing significant changes due to Saudi Arabia's new strategy. The country has shifted its focus from relying heavily on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil chokepoint, to utilizing its Red Sea terminal at Yanbu as a major export hub.

This transformation was spurred by the ongoing war in the region and its long-term impact on relations between countries. Saudi Arabia's decision to increase crude exports through Yanbu has made the security of the Red Sea more critical than ever for global oil markets.

According to shipbroker Xclusiv, the numbers illustrate the scale of this transformation. Between January and 23 July 2026, Yanbu loaded over 80 million metric tons of crude oil, equivalent to almost 588 million barrels, nearly four times the volume exported during the comparable pre-Middle East crisis period.

The majority of these exports go towards China, India, and east Asia, with around 70% of the crude oil shipments through Yanbu being directed to these regions. However, this shift in strategy has also led to a new concern: the increased importance of the Red Sea's security, particularly after the Houthis declared that vessels calling at Saudi ports could become legitimate targets.
