Saudi Capital on High Alert as Tensions Escalate with Iran-Backed Rebels
Saudi Arabia issued its first alert in the capital, Riyadh, since an escalation of fighting with Iran-backed rebels in neighboring Yemen. The alert warned of a 'hostile aerial threat' and was followed by reports of at least one explosion in the city.
According to residents near the airport, a plume of smoke was seen later in the morning. However, no casualties or damage were reported, despite Saudi authorities having previously intercepted Houthi missiles and drones.
The Houthis claimed responsibility for targeting 'sensitive sites' in Riyadh and facilities of Saudi oil giant Aramco in the Red Sea port of Yanbu, causing 'massive fires.' Neither Saudi authorities nor Aramco responded to a request for comment.
