Saudi air defenses intercepted and destroyed a hostile drone in the Riyadh region on Saturday (October 31, 2026), according to the spokesman for the Saudi-led military coalition. Turki al-Malki reported on X that debris from the interception fell without causing any injuries. The origin of the drone remains unclear.

In recent weeks, Yemen's Iran-backed Houthis have escalated attacks on Saudi Arabia, including strikes on Riyadh airport that led to its closure for two weeks and the cancellation of major events. These disruptions threaten the kingdom's economic diversification plans.

On Friday (October 30, 2026), Mr. Malki claimed the Houthis targeted the Medina region, home to Islam's second holiest city, though the group denied the allegation. The Houthi attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure, airports, and ships follow a resumption of hostilities in Yemen over the summer.

Since fighting reignited, more than 1,600 people have been killed and over 275,000 displaced, according to United Nations figures. A fragile 2022 truce collapsed in July after the Houthis allowed an Iranian plane to land in Sanaa, defying Saudi control over Yemeni airspace. The Houthis later declared a maritime blockade of Saudi Arabia and seized Yemen's entire Red Sea coast.
