Saudi East-West Pipeline Hit by Attack, Two Pumping Stations Damaged

Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline has been hit by an attack that damaged two pumping stations. The pipeline, which runs for over 1,200 km across the Arabian Peninsula, plays a vital role in supplying global markets with Middle Eastern oil.

The attack occurred last week and targeted pumping stations eight and nine. These stations are part of the 11 pumping stations and two separate pressure relief stations that service the pipeline.

The East-West Pipeline has been crucial for Saudi Arabia, which has used it to export 4-5 million barrels per day - approximately 4-5% of global supply - since the Strait of Hormuz was largely shut down due to war. The pipeline's importance lies in its role as a relief valve for oil exports.

Saudi officials have stated that the attack came from Iraq, and the pipeline temporarily shut down on Friday. However, it is unclear when repairs will be completed or how long the pipeline will remain out of service.
