Saudi Oil Pipeline Attacked by Drones Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions
The East-West oil pipeline in Saudi Arabia was shut down after a drone attack, threatening to send energy prices higher. The 1,200 km pipeline has been moving 4-5 million barrels per day, accounting for 4-5% of global supply.
US President Donald Trump said Iran was likely responsible for the attack, but there was no immediate claim of responsibility. Satellite images showed black smoke rising from an area south of Medina, with some injuries and damage reported.
The pipeline has been a vital route for Saudi oil exports since the Strait of Hormuz was largely shut down due to war. The disruption has already driven up oil prices, with diesel in the US reaching a record $6 per gallon.
