Saudi Oil Supply Disruption Exposes Europe's Vulnerability Ahead of Winter
A critical disruption in Saudi oil supplies is sending shockwaves through Europe's energy market as winter looms. The east-west pipeline, which transports 4-5% of global daily oil supply, was shut down after a recent attack and may take up to six weeks to repair.
European refineries rely heavily on Saudi crude oil, with around 600,000 to 800,000 barrels consumed daily. A long-term disruption could force them to find alternative crude types, pushing up costs or cutting fuel production.
The natural gas shortage is already sending warning signals to the European electricity market, with prices jumping significantly ahead of winter. The impact of oil supply disruptions could lead to higher crude and refined oil prices, as well as a new round of inflationary pressures.
