Saudi Petroline Expansion Sets Sights on Reducing Strait of Hormuz Dependence

Saudi Arabia is expanding its East-West Crude Oil Pipeline, known as Petroline, which will enable the kingdom to export more crude without relying on the Strait of Hormuz. The nearly 1,200 km pipeline connects oil fields in the Eastern Province to the Red Sea port of Yanbu and has been a key component of Saudi Arabia's logistics ambitions under Vision 2030.

The expansion plans, which would increase Petroline's capacity by up to 2 million barrels per day, are seen as a strategic move to reduce geopolitical risks and enhance export flexibility. Aramco President Amin H. Nasser highlighted the pipeline's importance in maintaining business continuity during disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Energy economist Carole Nakhle noted that while the expansion would increase Saudi Arabia's resilience, it would not eliminate concerns about supply disruptions or replace all exports that normally transit the Strait of Hormuz. The long-term value of the project will depend on evolving market fundamentals and engineering capacity.
