Saudi Pipeline Restart Nears, Brent Crude Price Slides to $102
The Brent crude oil price has been steadily declining over the past three days to $102.41 per barrel, down from its high of near $108 on September 14th. This decline is largely due to Saudi Arabia's announcement that it will restore roughly half the capacity of its damaged East-West pipeline within days and the full line within about six weeks.
The initial shock premium has been reduced as traders have repriced the duration of the outage, rather than the event itself. However, some analysts still believe that the risk premium remains embedded in the market, particularly with regards to the Iran situation.
As Saudi Arabia reroutes barrels through the Strait of Hormuz using shuttle vessels and ship-to-ship transfers, it reinstates exactly the chokepoint exposure the pipeline exists to avoid. The tension between this workaround and the potential for renewed US strikes on Iran remains a key driver of market sentiment.
