Semiconductor shortage hits Thailand's energy sector hard
Thailand's energy sector is facing supply chain disruptions due to the rising demand for advanced semiconductors from data centers and artificial intelligence applications, according to Preechai Trannitad, managing director of Yokogawa (Thailand).
The shortage has affected the delivery of critical industrial systems used in oil and gas operations, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals. PTT's LNG receiving terminal in Map Ta Phut, Rayong is one such example.
Trannitad pointed out that the rapid growth of data centers and AI applications has put pressure on semiconductor supply chains, leading to delays in delivery times for critical components used in industrial automation systems.
The shortage is not just limited to semiconductors, but also affects other energy-efficient technologies such as gas turbines. The decarbonization drive and increasing focus on energy efficiency are contributing to the growing demand for these components.
