Sensex, Nifty 50 Snap Two-Week Winning Streak Amid Global Uncertainty
The Indian stock market benchmarks Sensex and Nifty 50 ended Friday's session in the red, snapping their two-week winning streak. The decline was attributed to various factors including uncertainty over a US-Iran peace deal, volatile crude oil prices, rising bond yields, and concerns over inflation flare-up.
The Sensex dropped by 71 points, or 0.09%, to close at 78,009.25, while the Nifty 50 fell 30 points, or 0.12%, to end at 24,366. The mid-cap and small-cap segments underperformed, with the Nifty Midcap 100 index declining by 0.53% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 index falling by 0.69%.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, said that a sideways trend persisted in the market as investors awaited clarity on energy prices and global bond yields. Investors are currently chasing stock-specific action amid an earnings recovery, but geopolitical uncertainties remain a key risk for markets.
