Seplat Pushes for Gas Investment to Boost Nigeria’s Energy Future
Seplat Energy Plc has urged for greater investment across Nigeria’s gas sector to unlock the country’s substantial natural gas reserves and bolster energy security. Speaking at the Gas Investment Forum (GIF) 2026 in Lagos, Seplat Energy’s Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Effiong Okon, emphasized that Nigeria’s over 215 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves can only generate value through sustained investments in production, processing, and infrastructure. He highlighted that energy poverty remains a critical issue in Africa, with 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa lacking access to electricity.
Okon commended the Nigerian government’s efforts to improve investment conditions in the gas sector, noting initiatives addressing legacy debts and enhancing the bankability of gas projects. He praised recent final investment decisions and the launch of the OB3 gas pipeline as key milestones for Nigeria’s gas industry. The CEO also underscored the importance of policy reforms, particularly the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), in creating a more transparent and investor-friendly environment.
Seplat Energy has made significant investments in gas infrastructure over the past decade, including the 375 MMscfd Oben Gas Plant, the 90 MMscfd Sapele Gas Plant, and the 300 MMscfd ANOH Gas Plant. The company currently supplies gas to six power stations and supports industrial customers, contributing to Nigeria’s food security through gas supplies to fertilizer manufacturers. Okon also highlighted Seplat’s acquisition of ExxonMobil’s assets, which has increased domestic supplies of butane and LPG, and ongoing investments in CNG infrastructure to expand cleaner energy access.
Okon called on stakeholders to collaborate in unlocking projects that convert gas into usable energy to power Nigeria’s industrial future. He stressed the urgency of moving from discussions to implementation to fully realize the potential of Nigeria’s gas resources. The Gas Investment Forum aims to accelerate gas development and strengthen Nigeria’s position in regional and global energy markets.
