Shah Flags Off India's First LNG-Powered Train in Gujarat
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah inaugurated development projects worth Rs 1,472 crore in Ahmedabad and flagged off India's first LNG-powered train from Sabarmati Railway Station in Gujarat. The initiatives include a WAG-12 locomotive maintenance shed and the rollout of the Kavach train protection system on the Sabarmati-Kalol section.
The LNG powered train uses a dual-fuel system combining diesel and liquefied natural gas, aiming to reduce dependence on conventional diesel and support cleaner energy use in railway operations. Shah said the LNG train could contribute to environmental protection and described its launch as part of efforts to introduce more sustainable technologies in Indian Railways.
The development works inaugurated or launched during the programme have a combined value of Rs 1,472 crore. A major component is the WAG-12 maintenance shed at Sabarmati, constructed at a cost of Rs 700 crore for railway locomotive maintenance. The projects also include safety, connectivity and infrastructure improvements in the Ahmedabad region.
