Shell-Backed LNG Canada Project Expands Capacity Amid Global Trade Disruptions
The Shell-led LNG Canada venture has approved an expansion of its Kitimat project in Canada, doubling production capacity to 28 million metric tons per annum. Commercial operations from the expanded project are set to begin in the early 2030s.
The expansion will support Asia clients and reinforce energy security amid global trade and geopolitical disruptions. LNG Canada is expected to boost Canada's LNG export capabilities, aligning with Ottawa's push to position the country as a more important energy supplier.
Shell holds a 40% stake in the venture alongside Malaysia's Petronas, China's PetroChina, Japan's Mitsubishi Corp, and South Korea's state-owned Korea Gas Corp. The expansion is projected to attract CA$33 billion ($23.2 billion) in private capital and create thousands of jobs.
