Shell Greenlights LNG Canada Expansion Amid Global Supply Crunch

Shell has given the green light to the second phase of LNG Canada, doubling its capacity to 28 million tonnes per year. This expansion comes at a time when global LNG supplies have been curtailed by around 20% due to the Iran war. The startup is targeted for the early 2030s.

The decision to expand LNG Canada's capacity was likely influenced by the current supply crunch. With roughly one-fifth of global LNG supplies off the market, producers are looking to capitalize on the opportunity to increase production. Shell's investment in this project will help meet growing demand and support the transition to cleaner energy sources.
