Shell's Hidden LNG Empire Revealed
Shell's liquefied natural gas (LNG) business is larger than many investors realize, thanks to its significant trading operation and massive shipping fleet. In the second quarter of 2026, Shell sold a total of 17.96 million metric tons of LNG, which translates to nearly 72 million metric tons on an annualized basis.
However, it's worth noting that Shell's own LNG liquefaction volumes were just 7.7 million metric tons in Q2. This is because the company does not just produce LNG at its own facilities but also buys from partners and third parties to supply customers willing to pay the highest prices.
The scale of Shell's operation is considerable, with roughly 44 million metric tons of annual equity LNG capacity. The company operates one of the world's largest LNG shipping businesses, accounting for around 10% of the global market.
