Short-Stature Corn Emerges as Promising Alternative for Dairy Farmers
Short-stature corn is emerging as a promising alternative to traditional brown midrib (BMR) corn hybrids for dairy farmers. This new hybrid, which is about one-third to one-half shorter than conventional hybrids, has several agronomic advantages, including improved water-use efficiency, greater standability, and increased resistance to lodging caused by high winds and extreme weather.
A regional study conducted in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Iowa compared BMR, conventional tall, and short-stature corn hybrids. Preliminary results showed that short-stature corn matched the dry matter yield of tall-stature hybrids in 2024 but fell to a middle position in 2025. In terms of nutritional consistency, starch concentration followed the same pattern as tall hybrids in both years, while neutral detergent fiber concentration was consistently lower than BMR hybrids across both growing seasons.
Short-stature corn is also being evaluated for its potential integration into alfalfa interseeded systems. The shorter canopy allows greater light penetration, which may improve soil cover and contribute to overall productivity. By maintaining standability and supporting timely harvest, short-stature corn may help preserve the feeding value of corn silage.
