Brent Crude Tumbles Amid Iran-US Standoff and Surging US Oil Stocks
The Brent crude price has taken a hit due to escalating tensions between the US and Iran. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping route, remains closed as Tehran demands that Washington agree to six conditions, including a complete halt on military action in the region.
According to ANZ Bank's senior commodity strategist Daniel Hynes, 'The likelihood of a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz remains low.'
However, Brent's price gains were capped by a significant increase in US crude stocks. The American Petroleum Institute reported a 9.07 million barrel build in US crude oil inventories for the week ending August 7, against market expectations of a 500,000-barrel draw.
