Silver ETF Market Consolidates After Speculative Frenzy
India's silver ETF market is experiencing a consolidation phase after a year of intense speculative activity. In January, the total Assets Under Management (AUM) for these funds reached ₹1.17 lakh crore, but by July, this figure had dropped to ₹77,676 crore, a decline of 33%. This significant reduction in AUM indicates that short-term speculators have largely exited the market.
The sharp decrease in trading volumes is another telling sign of this shift. Trading activity has plummeted by over 90% from its January peak, suggesting that speculative traders are no longer driving the price action. However, a segment of investors continues to view silver as a long-term holding for portfolio diversification.
The dual nature of silver as both a precious metal and an industrial commodity makes it more sensitive to economic cycles than gold. A significant portion of silver demand comes from industrial applications, particularly in solar panel production. This characteristic means that shifts in global manufacturing trends can impact the long-term price potential of silver.
